Gopher is part of the Gopher Group, a digital advertising technology business, started in 2007 by two Kiwi entrepreneurs, John Campbell and BJ Sveistrup, who have been friends since childhood. John & BJ were sick of seeing New Zealand money being siphoned offshore by large multinational corporations, so they decided to start their own company, a company that would support New Zealand based businesses. John describes the drive behind the business creation:

"We saw what was going on, and we saw New Zealand companies being stifled by international monopolies that didn't do anything for them. Seeing the opportunity for ourselves and our potential customers, we set up a business with a borrowed computer."
